My R died. I was printing and got a "End of Useful Sevice Life" message. I went to the FAQ's for Epson and it said that my ink pads needed replacing and the reset software needed to be downloaded after replacing pads at an Epson Authorized Service Center. The FAQ then went on to say that replacing ink pads was expensive and not recommended, as other parts in the printer were most likely near the end of their service life.

Does anyone know the cost of replacing ink pads on an Epson R printer? I'm trying to decide between fixing the printer or following Epson's suggestion and simply replacing the printer with a new printer. This is inkrepublic's page leading to the SSC utility download page.

What you will want to try is run the SSC utility, find its little icon in the task bar tray and right click on it and try some of the resets possibly available in its menu. If you just reset the counter, waste ink will continue to flow into the pads until they overflow and make a big mess. Replacing the pads is not cheap. I would suggest just adding an external waste ink bottle. One came for free with my InkRepublic CIS, but you can get them separately.

It was fairly easy to add this to my R and should be the same for the I just received a set of pads from encompass. I also have the service manual to help with disassembly and re assembly, I hope! There are also other printer models covered in the wider forum. Whilst you may have the pads for replacement you may want to consider an external tank as a simpler process and less likely to knock the printer out of gross alignment. There's no question that installing an external waste tank is easier and less "invasive" than replacing the pads.

It involves removing one of the side panels and that's pretty much it. In contrast, pulling out the pads unlike the waste tank on the involves removing both side panels, a lot of screws, and pulling the "guts" out of the plastic case. A bit more dicey though I've done this many times and greater risk of breaking the microswitches, knocking things out of alignment or damaging parts. Go with the external waste tank.

Pose this as a question and make it a new thread. You will get more chance of an answer than kick starting a 4 year old thread.
